I love this track, it's probably my favorite. The title is Christian Keller's. It opened up so many possibilities; it could have been campy and sexy. But instead I chose to write about social/psychological issues and the struggle for acceptance. I didn't realize how true this song was until over a year later.
I also thought it would be fun to sing it like Bruce Springsteen. Why not, right?
lyrics
Baby you can be my petting zoo
Visit on a Sunday afternoon
Spend the whole day just touching you
There's nothing that I'd rather do
But there's a wire fence between us
And you're distracted by another lamb
And when I press my nose against the fence,
You walk away.
But I'm not some little child
I won't cry and give up so fast.
I know the gates are closing,
But I'm coming back tomorrow.
Baby, you can be my petting zoo
Visit on a Sunday afternoon
Spend the whole day just touching you
There's nothing that I'd rather do
And if that wire fence is worn out,
I will find the gaping hole.
When I cross over to your side,
I don't care if they all stare.
They can throw trash and mistreat us,
Stick out their tongues but they won't defeat us.
I'd rather be in prison as long as you are with me.
Baby, you can be my petting zoo
Visit on a Sunday afternoon
Spend the whole day just touching you
There's nothing that I'd rather do
You don't have fur, and you smell so nice,
So unlike the other sheep.
You're civilized, and your talk makes sense
Wish I could carry you across that fence.
Wish you were more than just a petting zoo,
Tear down this fence and you can touch me too.
Spend my time getting old with you,
There's nothing I would rather do
There's nothing I would rather do
